The State of the Salmon: Visualizing population data from Fraser River Sockeye

چکیده

In this project, I integrated data about Fraser River salmon populations and develop an interactive data visualization tool that allows fisheries scientists and managers to explore this data at different spatial and temporal scales. The objective of this project is to provide fisheries scientists and managers with the tools to easily and comprehensively explore trends in salmon data, and discover features and attributes of that data.

Population structure of sea-type and lake-type sockeye salmon and kokanee in the Fraser River and Columbia River drainages

Population structure of three ecotypes of Oncorhynchus nerka (sea-type Sockeye Salmon, lake-type Sockeye Salmon, and Kokanee) in the Fraser River and Columbia River drainages was examined with microsatellite variation, with the main focus as to whether Kokanee population structure within the Fraser River drainage suggested either a monophyletic or polyphyletic origin of the ecotype within the d...

Environmental conditions and physiological state influence estuarine movements of homing sockeye salmon

The reproductive migration of anadromous salmonids through estuarine waters is one of the most challenging stages of their life cycle, yet little is known about the environmental and physiological conditions that influence migratory behaviour. We captured, sampled tissues, tagged and released 365 sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) homing through inner coastal waters towards the Fraser River, B...

A Comparison of Estimates of First Nations Catches of Fraser River Sockeye Salmon from 1996 to 1999 by Scale-based Discriminant Function Models and Run Reconstruction Models

Historically, the Pacific Salmon Commission has used run reconstruction models to assign stock of origin to sockeye salmon (Onchorhynchus nerka) catches in the Fraser River First Nations fishery. Since 1987, scale samples have been collected from sockeye caught in the First Nations fishery to enable the Pacific Salmon Commission to make direct scale-based estimates of the catch by stock group. ...

Sea Louse Infection of Juvenile Sockeye Salmon in Relation to Marine Salmon Farms on Canada's West Coast

BACKGROUND Pathogens are growing threats to wildlife. The rapid growth of marine salmon farms over the past two decades has increased host abundance for pathogenic sea lice in coastal waters, and wild juvenile salmon swimming past farms are frequently infected with lice. Here we report the first investigation of the potential role of salmon farms in transmitting sea lice to juvenile sockeye sal...

Low cardiac and aerobic scope in a coastal population of sockeye salmon Oncorhynchus nerka with a short upriver migration.

This study showed that a coastal population (Harrison) of Fraser River sockeye salmon Oncorhynchus nerka had a lower aerobic and cardiac scope compared with interior populations with more challenging upriver spawning migrations, providing additional support to the idea that Fraser River O. nerka populations have adapted physiologically to their local migratory environment.
